Q & A Questions and Answers
Q. Who needs
counseling?

Everyone can use
counseling sometime during his/her life. People who seek
counseling are not crazy, rather they are looking for more
satisfying ways through their difficulties. It takes courage to
do this, yet it has proven to be one of the best ways to improve
your life, family, marriage, and/or relationships. |
Q. When should I
seek counseling?
Now! Don't put off your
need for help. Time does not heal all wounds. Waiting for life to
get better can be harmful. Common reasons for consulting Agape
include persistent unhappiness, constant tension and anxiety,
marital or family conflict, unsatisfying personal relationships,
sexual difficulties, spiritual growth needs, fears, persistent
worries, depression, and work related issues.
Q. Will
counseling help?
Yes! Counseling will
help you take steps that will enable you to:
- identify what is going
wrong
- evaluate what can be
changed
- reduce your discomfort
- cope with your problem
- form meaningful and
supportive relationships

Q. What can I
expect from my counselor?
Expect an
understanding, warm, caring person who is also capable, well
trained, and professional. Expect to be treated with respect and
dignity. Expect your counselor to work with you as well as for you.
Q. Can I reach my
counselor in the evenings or weekends for emergencies?
When you
call Agape at 206-772-2200, your counselor will answer your call as
soon as possible, Mon - Fri., between 9am & 6pm. Your counselor can
usually call you back within a couple of hours, or even sooner.
However, at other times your counselor is not immediately available
unless previously arranged. When the most pressing needs require an
immediate response, you can call the mental health crisis hotline at
206-461-3222 or call 911. If you anticipate that you will need to
get in touch with your counselor at a particular time, please
discuss this in person so we can make arrangements.
Q.
What will happen in the first session?

You will continue
the conversation begun on the telephone when you set up your
appointment. We will explore with you what you are up against
and what kind of help you are looking for. You and your
counselor will decide what next steps are to be taken, e.g. what
problems are to be worked on, and who will be involved in
counseling.

Q. How long does
counseling take?
Every problem is
different and each individual responds differently. Most cases
involve at least eight to twelve sessions. Depending on the nature
of the problem, you may need more or less time. Remember, learning
to live more fully and with greater satisfaction is a process and
usually cannot be achieved in only one session.
Q. How much does
counseling cost?
Counseling fees for
professional services are openly discussed and established when the
first appointment is scheduled. These fees are fairly standardized
with other comparable services in the community, and most insurance
companies will help cover these costs. Regular sessions are
typically 50 minutes and may be extended as needed.
Q. What services
do you offer?
Agape offers
individual, conjoint, and family therapy for those experiencing
marital/family difficulties, adjustment problems, stress,
depression, and short-term disability work-related issues. Our staff
is also available primarily for church-related workshops and
seminars on marriage & family enrichment, effective parenting, etc.,
and for consultation with ministers, churches, businesses, and
various faith-based organizations. For further information, please
contact Dr. Gene Anderson.
Q. What makes
Christian counseling different from all the others?
Many counseling centers
offer valuable help. In most cases though, psychology does not
supply all the answers. Here at Agape we are able to apply Biblical
truths and principles to practical situations. The positive
difference, however, is God's intervention in lives.
Q. What if I have
tried counseling before?
Good. Let's start where
you left off. Many of our clients have previously been involved in
counseling. Don't put it off! Make this the turning point in your
life.

“When
I came to Agape Counseling I needed to be affirmed both personally
and spiritually. I had been in more secular counseling and while I
felt their empathy and concern, I knew I needed more. I decided to
try Christian Counseling. Even after the first session, I sensed the
presence of the Lord more clearly than I have for a good long while.
My experience with Agape since then has been definitely rewarding,
and I feel more certain than ever that God is guiding me on my
pathway. Truly God has intervened and has used Agape significantly
in the process. Thank you for being there and helping me in a time
of need."-Sid*-
